Wood can be dividedinto two groups - softwood and hardwood. Softwoods come from coniferous (evergreen) trees and are used extensively in the construction and paper-making industries, but seldom for the supply of veneers. Hardwoods are generally obtained from deciduous trees (they shed their leaves each year) and provide most of the veneer.
That are many factors which contribute to the eventual pattern of a veneer but the characteristics of a particular wood (its grain and texture), and the method of cutting it are the two most important ones.
