Heritage - Conservation & Preservation

Every architectural or non-architectural conservation should have aesthetic appeal. When one mentions about conservation, one thinks about heritage, traditions, culture, building of yesteryear and the pain-staking effort of restoring and repairing them. Heritage also includes the conservation, preservation and restoration of buildings and artifacts.

Prior to Malaysia embarking on the task of conserving and preserving its heritage, many prominent buildings were demolished in the name of progress and development. Conservation, similar to architecture, is about people and the community, not merely the building or the structure.

Preserving a living tradition and culture is equally important. The difficulty is in educating and instilling the different groups of the importance of conservation, as means to preserve our identity in this fast changing world and rapid process of globalization.

Heritage, tradition and culture had made us what we are today.

Some of the organizations that are actively contributing towards the conservation of heritage are:

  • UNESCO World Heritage Programme
  • Badan Warisan Malaysia
  • Penang Heritage Trust
